In Oklahoma, you're just not an Oklahoman unless you have a Sam's Club card. These are facts. It has been this way for the past 20 years and is now facing serious competition with several Costco's opening up around the Metro.
You can keep your Costco. Save me, Sam's Club. There's something about the smell, the nostalgia, and a really large slice of cheesy, pepperoni pizza from the "cafe" that gets me.
On this recent trip, though, I was surprised by how many awesome kid lit treasures I found in the book section. Actually, really surprised since I had been to Barnes & Noble as well as Half Price Books earlier that week and was sadly disappointed by the same ol' same ol'.
I bought every last thing featured here. This isn't an ad, just a Public Service Announcement for other children's book goobers like me.
3 Awesome Kid Lit Finds at Sam's Club
Board books are easy to find; they're pretty much everywhere. Even at Sam's! Normally, you could find this version of "There's a Monster in Your Book" by Tom Fletcher at Target or other places, but you'd probably be paying about $2 to $3 more. Not much of a difference, but I like to pinch pennies. (;
They had a surprisingly varied collection of children's classics in board book form such as Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carle and Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister.
To me, these are beacons of my 90s childhood and could have a blog post on their own.
The other super awesome kid lit find I had was this board game featuring Dog Man! He is pretty mainstream right now, but I don't believe his success is unwarranted. I'm a pretty big fan of Dav Pilkey. As a kid, I latched on to funny books with silly and dry characters. Mr. Pilkey certainly held his own back then with kids in the early 2000s and now he's creating enduring work with my own children.
I did do some research when I came home and Wal-Mart has is for $15 whereas Sam's is $20, but it was a pleasant surprise for us as we love Dog Man and didn't know he had his own board game! It's definitely saved under our Birthday List for my eight year old. We will do a game review on it in the future!
And my most FAVE find?! I literally yelped when I found this on the bottom shelf (to which I pulled them all out and placed them on the top where they deserve to be seen). "Mom's Family Calendar" by Sandra Boynton.
I love author/illustrator Sandra Boynton. Her illustrations remind me a bit of Mercer Mayer and his "Little Critter" series. As a teacher, former nanny, and Mama, Boynton's board books have been staples for us over the years. We have our own melody for "Snuggly Puppy". All toddlers go crazy for "Barnyard Dance" and we giggle and smile at "Moo, Baa, La La La".
Note: I suspect if you have older kids who
are growing (or are grown) out of Boynton books then Mo Willems is a similar and well-worthy step-in.
But I am not too grown for this calendar. After all, it says "MOM'S FAMILY" on the front. This is a large, vertical master calendar spread. It dates from August 2021 to December 2022!
It comes with adorable magnets and two pages of stickers -- all complete with illustrations by Sandra herself. It's really fun!
One of the things I like about it is the spreadsheet-like categories for our family members. I can write in everyone's names at the top and place stickers underneath them for appointments or birthday's or events.
Honestly, I'm horrible at organization. If something is cute and comes with stickers and magnets and pulls on my nostalgic heartstrings -- I will buy it. And now I'll use it for something useful!
And ta-da! It's already on our fridge to stay!
If you don't have a Sam's Club, you probably have a Wal-Mart. If you don't have that either, that's probably good for you and your wallet. However, I know you have internet or else you wouldn't be reading this right now.
So, here's a link to Mom's Family Calendar for you to purchase online! I receive no affiliation through this. I just think it's awesome. (:
